| Here, at the Edenbridge and Oxted Show this year, the Surrey Branch of the Salmon and Trout Association organized an exhibition of what we do and provided an opportunity for everyone from 10 years upwards to have a go at flyfishing. Tuition was carried on throughout the day by a team of highly qualified and experienced instructors and for a modest fee of £5 anyone aged 10 and over was able to have a go. In addition our instructors, under Steve Fisher, our most experienced instructor, gave, will give three demonstrations of casting each day which attracted a good crowd of onlookers. Inside the Marquee there were demonstrations of Fly Tying, Taxidermy and Fish Sculpting together with Rod Making and Restoration. In addition there were examples examples of what the Association has achieved during this year to improve the waters for everyone.. Our fly tyers, Ian McKenzie and David Taylor are both experienced fishermen and able demonstrators of their art. They tied flies both to imitate the natural ones and also as colourful lures for use in certain conditions. Trevor King is the Taxidermist and he had several demonstrations of his skill on show. These ranged from tiny gudgeon to large salmon. He also sculpts fish in wood. Barry Grantham is an expert split cane rod maker. He also repairs split cane rods and antique reels and tackle. His work attracted much attention. In addition, a rota of helpers from the branch took the bookings for the casting demonstrations and explained what the Branch did to a steady stream of enquirers who were able to take away several of the leaflets on display. A few were interested enough to join the Salmon & Trout Association. |
